Análise de Elementos Finitos de uma Engrenagem Cilíndrica de Dentes Retos Considerando Métodos de Alívio de Massa
This paper deals with analyzing the structural influence of mass reliefs in spur gears. For this purpose, a system composed of pinion and a gear was designed, such that for gear several geometries were designed with different reliefs shapes and soul thicknesses. From the proposed geometries, finite element analysis (FEA) was performed, and the tooth stresses of each model were compared with the solid gear. From the results, it was observed that the tooth stresses are reduced in some cases. Besides, from the aforementioned cases, it is possible to observe that the maximum stresses may take place in its core instead of the teeth (rim area). On the other hand, based on other cases, the core thickness plays an important role as a criterion that defines the local stress.
Numerical and experimental evaluation of ERA and ERA / OKID methods for the identification of mechanical systems
This work presents two algorithms of Identification of state-space linear Systems, as follows: ERA (Eigensystem Realization Algorithm), developed by Juang and Pappa (1985), and ERA/ OKID (Observer/ Kalman Filter Identification), by Phan et al. (1992). Both were conceived at the environment of Aerospace Engineering, where it was indispensable the appearance of a trustworthy tool to identify the complex structures and the inherent systems-The first one requires that the system is subjected to an impulse input and that the output (Markov Parameters) is organized in a known matrix as Hankel matrix. This matrix is then decomposed in singular values, which permits, with the help of the concepts of controllability and observability, a convenient mathematical manipulation that gives the desired realization, that is the system in state-space. The second one was conceived for underdamping systems. Therefore, it results, mathematically, in a State observer, so that, a virtual damping at the signal is added. This resource allows a data compression and, consequently, lower computational effort. Thus, OKID provides, from any sort of input, Markov parameters of the observer and the system, and the last one will feed ERA.
The motivation of the work is to help the Control Engineering in the identification, in state-space, of complex systems, whose analytical modelling is difficult due to several reasons. Furthermore, it helps its simulations.
In order to make it possible, the work presents the Theory of Systems Realization, ERA and ERA/ OKID algorithms, and from these concepts, a numerical assessment of a mechanical system with two degrees of freedom using ERA, and an experimental assessment of an acoustic pipe using ERA/ OKID.
The dissertation concluded that, for the studied cases, the presented tecniques are efficient, and as a result, they become powerful tools of identification and points out some future perspectives in the realized research.

Vibration control of rotating machines using shape memory alloy
This work is dedicated to passive and semi-active vibration control of flexible rotors by using
shape memory alloys in the support of the system. A rotor represented by a horizontal shaft
comprising a rigid disc supported by two bearings with flexible base at both ends was investigated
both through numerical simulation and experimentation. The numerical model used
in the simulations was obtained according to the Finite Elements Method (FEM). Due to the
high number of degrees of freedom this model was reduced in such a way that only the first
three bending modes of the rotor. The strategy used to control the vibrations is based on a
suspension with a SMA wire elongation system connected to the most flexible bearing. The
Bearing Suspension by Wires, or simply, BSW, acts only along the horizontal direction and is
encapsulated by a heating chamber whose purpose is to control the wire temperature. Obtaining
experimental natural frequencies of the rotor was a fundamental step to adjust the finite
elements model. As the system is nonlinear since the SMA elasticity molulus is dependent of
the thermo-mechanical state (temperature and strain), an inverse model for the suspension
was used in order to solve the nonlinear problem. The constitutive model that governs the
SMA behaviour is a modified Brinson s model which considers only the pseudoelastic effect,
thus defining a region of interest due to energy dissipation inherent to the hysteretic loop. The
experimental part of the work has been carried out by considering several conditions for the
rotor operation, namely: rotor at rest, steady state and transient responses. The results, both
numerical and experimental, reveal the potential of using shape memory alloys as a feasible
alternative to passive and semi-active control of rotors.
Vibration control of a flexible rotor suspended by shape memory alloy wires
The present contribution is devoted to the study of the influence of shape memory alloys on the dynamic behavior of flexible rotors. In this sense, a suspension composed by pseudoelastic shape memory alloy wires that are connected to a rotor-bearing test rig was designed. To evaluate the performance of the system, both numerical and experimental investigations are carried out. The suspension stiffness can vary, especially in the pseudoelastic region, so that this variation takes place per a hysteretic cycle denoting energy dissipation whenever the loading magnitude is sufficient to induce a phase transformation. The constitutive model used to describe the shape memory alloy behavior is a modified version of the Brinson model for the one-dimensional case. To provide all thermomechanical properties of shape memory alloy wire, a complete characterization process was performed. Due to numerical reasons, the size of the model of the rotating system was reduced. Finally, numerical and experimental results demonstrate the success of shape memory alloy applied to the suspension of rotating machines as an interesting alternative for vibration control
